Marie Jaans Hibbits (1895-1984)

Marked: Signed Marie Jaans within image as well as titled on the reverse Yarrow with printed signature on reverse and original gallery label from the Robert Pyle Gallery of Morro Bay, California.

Condition: The subject is in very nice condition with no tears, holes and rather strong original pigments. The original matt needs to be replaced and the reverse dust cover shows soiling and some tears, which does not affect subject whatsoever. Frame has light nicks and marks. This is a very nice original watercolor by an important Modernist artist, who last resided in Buellton, California. The subject has not been removed from the framing.

Dimensions: Image area 5.5 inches by 7.5 inches, where as frame measures 12.5 inches by 13.75 inches.

Notes: Marie Jaans Hibbits was born in France. She studied at the Labaudt School of San Francisco. Her work is included in the Long Beach Museum of Art. In 1961, she was awarded the very presitigious Santa Barbara New-Press award for her watercolor Pastel City. She was, of course, the spouse of Forrest Hibbits.
