Notes:
Per Edan Hughes, Charles Frederick Krantz was born in San Francisco,
CA on July 21, 1881 of German parents. Krantz (né Krautz)
was artistically inclined at an early age. By 18 he was working
as a sign painter and leather worker in his native city. At the
turn of the century his signature was C. Krautz but
due to anti-German sentiment during the World War One years he anglicized
his name to Krantz. About 1920 he married and settled in Oakland.
After the death of his wife, in 1945 he moved across the Golden
Gate to Fairfax into a home on Buena Vista Avenue. There his terraced
hillside yard was filled with flowers which he painted daily. A
prolific painter, his home was crammed with landscapes, florals,
and scenes of the San Francisco Bay area. Tamalpais Valley was one
of his favorite painting spots. He also left a portfolio of watercolors
and gouaches of every known species of orchids. Krantz was a frail,
small man with a high-pitched voice and quite deaf. He died at San
Rafael (CA) General Hospital on September 11, 1959. Works held:
California Historical Society. This painting of Cypress Point would
be perfect for a Gustav Stickley or Richard Detreville decor.
